“The Federation has done a great deal of work and invested heavily in bringing golf closer to more people and expanding its practice. Within this principle and logic, golf will have our support in what is our objective and function as an Olympic Committee, namely with regard to supporting golfers who are in a phase of affirmation and rising in the ranking so that they can go to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles”, stated the president of the COP, at the event ‘Forget everything you think about golf’, in Monsanto.
As part of this event, which focused on the presentation of the 'Portugal Golf' brand, with a new logo intended to reach new players and potential investors, and also on a forum to discuss the state of the sport in Portugal and possible strategies to attract investment and growth, Fernando Gomes praised the work carried out by the Portuguese Golf Federation.
“Our institutional presence is to support an Olympic federation that is doing a fantastic job of developing its own expansion as a sport and today made the decision to launch a new image for golf in Portugal. Therefore, we could not fail to be here”, he added.
Through her own words, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, included golf as one of the sports to be taken into account in the “fight against sedentarism”, considering it essential to make it accessible to everyone, “regardless of their condition or origin”.
“The launch of this brand is a statement. Golf wants to be more present in the lives of Portuguese people and wants to position itself as an increasingly modern, dynamic and evolved sport,” he concluded, during an event in which the men’s and women’s teams of the sport were also presented.
Simple… Price, Price and Price! Stop catering to the tourist (over priced) market and make courses offer more affordable rates to both nationals and locals inc. junior and senior rates. As it currently is structured only wealthy locals can afford to practice and play on a regular basis. Seriously, 55 euros to rent a golf buggy in 34 degree heat with no water or cooling stations on the golf courses. Price gouging at its finest!!!
