First officially recognised by the United Nations in 2009, the commemoration encourages people to honour the legacy of South Africa’s first Black president by volunteering 67 minutes, which is equivalent to his 67 years of public service.

According to the 2024 National Food and Nutrition Security Survey (NFNSS), 63.5 percent of South African households were food insecure, translating to over 20 million people going without food every day.
