In their statement, the regional government highlighted that this agreement is a national first – the first of its kind signed directly with a regional government. While similar partnerships exist elsewhere in Portugal, they have traditionally been made with local councils rather than governmental bodies.

The protocol will see RG3 support the Civil Protection Service by deploying soldiers to patrol forested areas. Their mission will be to detect potential fires early and identify risk situations, including the presence of individuals who might intentionally start fires.

The government stressed the importance of this collaboration, particularly during the high-risk summer months, saying it is vital for protecting the region’s forests and safeguarding the well-being of local communities.

Under the agreement, RG3 will provide a daily patrol unit – one vehicle and two soldiers – from July through September. In October and November, assistance will depend on fire risk assessments and operational availability.

The regiment will coordinate efforts with the Regional Emergency Operations Command and report any incidents to the relevant authorities.

In turn, the Civil Protection Service will supply the necessary logistical support and cover expenses related to transportation, meals, and allowances for the military personnel involved.

“This agreement, the first of its kind in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, significantly strengthens our capacity to prevent and respond to forest fires,” the government stated.
