In a statement, the PSP explained that the weapons destruction operation took place following World Disarmament Day.

In total, 7,879 weapons were destroyed, including guns and bladed weapons. Since 2013, the PSP has destroyed more than 318,000 weapons, with 2018 being the year with the most weapons destroyed—37,351.

According to figures released today by the PSP, firearms are the most seized type of weapon by the police force. In 2024, 2,655 firearms and 1,662 bladed weapons were seized.

Voluntary surrenders, however, are the highest. Since 2019, the number of voluntary surrenders has exceeded 92,000 weapons.

The PSP also highlighted that, since 2018, 2,290 weapons have been reused "in various legally possible ways": 610 firearms and extendable batons were used for training and operational activities, 906 weapons were used for the PSP's collection, and 774 were used for the museum collection.

In addition to weapons, the PSP also promotes the destruction of ammunition. Between 2019 and 2024, more than 42 tons of ammunition and cartridges were destroyed.

Given the positive results of last year's operation, in which 173 weapons were handed over to the PSP between July and August, the police force began a similar operation on July 1, which will continue until August 4. This operation is "dedicated to gathering information on the rules regarding the possession, use, and transfer of firearms and ammunition, promoting the licensing and collection of firearms."
