"At the beginning of this year, the price of roasted ground coffee was 3.81 euros. Since then, it has increased by 1.05 euros (up 28 percent). A year ago, the same package of roasted ground coffee cost 1.59 euros less (down 49 percent), and on January 5, 2022, it cost 1.86 euros less (down 62 percent)," the consumer protection organisation states.
Data from DECO PROTeste, which has been monitoring prices weekly, shows that the basic food basket is also on an "upward trend":
"Last week, the basket of 63 essential food items monitored by DECO PROTeste since 2022 registered a price increase of 74 cents (up 0.31 percent), to 240.12 euros," the statement reads.
Compared to the beginning of the year, "this basket of essential goods increased by €3.95 (up 1.67 percent). A year ago, on the other hand, it cost R$12.01 less (down 5.26 percent). On January 5, 2022, when DECO PROteste began monitoring the cost of the basic food basket, the price was €187.70, down €52.42 (down 27.93 percent)."
Last week, between July 2 and 9, besides ground roasted coffee, the products whose prices increased the most were horse mackerel (up 24 percent), crisp lettuce (up 20 percent), and fish fingers (up 18 percent).
"If we compare this week's prices with those of the first week of 2025, on the other hand, the largest percentage price increase was seen in products such as ground roasted coffee (up 28%), eggs (up 24%), oranges (up 20%), and Gala apples (up 19 percent)."
Since DECO PROteste began this analysis on January 5, 2022, "the largest percentage increases were in beef for cooking (up 97%), eggs (up 75%), and tomato paste (up 70 percent)."
It may be cheaper to order batches online from other EU countries, and there is more choice. And they often tell you which types of beans it is. AI chatbots can help find stores with reasonable prices and shipping costs, for example Coffee Henk in the Netherlands.
