Portuguese international and Liverpool player Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother, 26, died this morning in a road accident on the A52, in Cernadilla, Zamora, Spain.

“The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honoured the name of Portugal, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I offer my deepest condolences to his family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sport,” wrote Luís Montenegro in a post on X.

Diogo Jota was a player for Liverpool, a club he had represented for five seasons and where he shone, especially in the second season, still with the German Jürgen Klopp, with 55 games and 21 goals scored.

The striker, who was part of the attacking trio with Mo Salah, and in other seasons with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, was involved in the conquest of an English Championship, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a Super Cup.

In his career, the player, who was trained at Gondomar and Paços de Ferreira, also played for FC Porto for a season, on loan from Atlético de Madrid, who then loaned him out to Wolverhampton, where he ended up signing and playing for three seasons.

In the national team, the footballer, who had a knack for scoring goals, also ended up being a reference, not always as a starter, but with 49 call-ups and two Nations League titles under his belt.

The accident in Spain also resulted in the death of André Silva, brother of Diogo Jota, a winger who represented Penafiel, in the Second League of football.
