Hosted on an exclusive, invitation-only basis, the event gathered a handpicked circle of the UK’s finest sommeliers for an afternoon of vinous discovery. Taking place from 12:30pm to 4pm, the challenge was personally overseen by David Guimaraens, Taylor’s Technical Director and Head Winemaker.
The programme opened with an insightful seminar exploring the legacy and complexity of Vintage Port, followed by a captivating demonstration of the Port Tong method – the traditional, flame-heated tool used to open bottles of mature Port with theatrical flair and precision.
At the heart of the event lay a formidable test: a blind tasting of six Taylor’s Vintage Ports, each representing a different decade. Sommeliers were invited to identify each vintage year, provide comprehensive tasting notes, suggest ideal drinking windows, and propose thoughtfully paired dishes suited to their restaurant’s cuisine.
Following the live challenge, competitors have one week to refine their written submissions. Entries will be judged by David Guimaraens himself, who will assess the precision and creativity of each sommelier’s recommendations. Winners will be announced on 15 September.
The coveted top prize? A luxurious two-night escape to Porto for two, featuring a stay at the world-renowned Yeatman Hotel, a private tasting with Guimaraens, and an exclusive gift of handpicked Taylor’s Vintage Ports. Runners-up will also be awarded with distinguished prizes recognising their expertise and flair.
All winning submissions – including tasting notes and food pairings – will be proudly showcased on Taylor’s Port official website, forming a permanent educational archive. This initiative not only honours the sommeliers’ craft, but also inspires wine lovers to deepen their appreciation for one of the world’s greatest fortified wines.
