With Sharon’s surprising rise from shy retiree to confident performer and Joana’s classically trained vocals and theatrical flair, these two women light up stages across the Algarve with their dazzling Abba renditions, original costumes, and infectious energy.

The duo

Sharon and Joana are the dynamic duo behind the Abba Honeys. Their journey began quite by chance — the two met during a lively karaoke night at a local bar, where their shared love for Abba’s music sparked an instant connection. What began as a lighthearted, thirty-minute duet performed at Sharon’s husband Stuart’s 60th birthday party, soon blossomed into something much bigger — the start of a musical partnership neither of them had expected. That serendipitous meeting was the beginning of the Abba Honeys, a tribute act known for their energy, harmony, original costumes and dazzling performances.

At first glance, Sharon comes across as shy and reserved, so it was a genuine surprise to many of her family and friends when she stepped into the spotlight for the first time. But perhaps, no one was more surprised than Sharon herself. ‘Never in a million years did I think I’d be doing this,’ she admits with a laugh.

Originally from Wales, Sharon and her family often vacationed in Spain and had long envisioned retiring there. However, over time, they found the atmosphere less welcoming than expected — a subtle sense of unfriendliness and quiet obstruction that made them reconsider. That shift led them to explore Portugal instead, and it turned out to be the perfect fit. They were immediately drawn to the warmth — not just of the sunshine, but of the people themselves. What they love most is the variety: the option to spend a peaceful day on a beautiful beach or dive into the vibrant nightlife, filled with festive music, laughter, and the easy camaraderie of locals and fellow travellers alike.

Singing lessons

Having never sung or performed in public, Sharon dedicated herself to singing lessons — and her hard work paid off. ‘During those first few performances, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I was trembling, my chest was tight, and I could barely breathe. But then, something shifted — my confidence kicked in, and in that moment, I knew. This wasn’t just a performance… it was a dream I didn’t even realise I’d been waiting my whole life to live.’ The support she received from her family, along with the encouragement of her singing partner Joana, played a big role in her transformation. Amazingly, their first few performances led to several future bookings.

Joana is a native of Portugal, born in Portimão and still living there. ‘I’ve never had the desire to travel,’ she says, ‘I’m quite happy to sleep in my own bed surrounded by my three cats.’

On first impression, Joana may strike people as even more reserved than Sharon — almost a little unapproachable. But that changes the moment she starts talking. Beneath the quiet exterior is a genuinely warm and engaging person, full of kindness and good humour.

She received classical training as a soprano with the Adágio Choir in Portimão. It was with them that she performed her first solo (in German) — at a pipe organ festival held in a packed church. In that powerful moment, she realised that music was destined to become a significant part of her life.

Theatre performances

Her English is excellent — something she attributes to years of watching American cartoons. She has a knack for accents too, effortlessly switching between British and American tones. That talent came in especially handy when she landed the lead role in a local production of Sister Act, which was deemed by many to be just as good as a professional company. Joana has showcased her talents in both singing and acting through a variety of productions with the Algarvean Theatre, earning praise for her dynamic stage presence. She has an incredible voice with impressive range, and when asked if she’d ever consider going professional full-time, she confessed that she loves her work as a veterinary nurse far too much to leave it behind. ‘However,’ she added with a smile, ‘I’d absolutely love the chance to perform in some of my all-time favourite musicals — Grease, Les Misérables, My Fair Lady, or Wicked. Just imagining myself stepping into one of those iconic roles gives me goosebumps. It would be a dream come true.’

Sharon’s husband, Stuart, is a DJ for weddings and private events — he even has his own portable dance floor. He recalls being instantly impressed with Joana when they first met. Without hesitation, she broke into song, performing ‘My Favourite Things’ from The Sound of Music in a flawless English accent.

Future plans may include a Rock Tribute to “Girl Power”.

You can see them perform at the Ancora Bar on Saturday nights and Frankies on Wednesday nights.
