One of the most important transitions for many women is the journey through perimenopause and menopause. With the right support, this phase can become a time of strength, clarity, and renewed purpose.

We live in a society that talks more and more about mental health - but often still struggles to practice true emotional awareness and respect in daily life. When we shout instead of speak, demand instead of explain, or push others down to lift ourselves up, we unknowingly create more stress and emotional imbalance - not just for ourselves, but for those around us.

Each person is shaped by their life experiences. From the moment we are born, our minds begin giving meaning to the emotions we feel. Some people were raised with love and security. Others felt invisible or unloved. These early emotional patterns influence how we cope with stress, how we relate to others, and how we feel about ourselves as adults.

But no matter your story, there is always space for growth and healing. Understanding the impact of your past - and making peace with it - can help you feel stronger and more balanced in the present. Accepting that our parents gave us what they were able to give, even if it wasn’t perfect, can bring a sense of calm and closure.

Menopause is not just a physical change – it’s an emotional one, too. It marks a natural turning point in a woman’s life, but it can also bring challenges. Hormonal shifts can affect mood and mental clarity. In fact, the first signs of perimenopause are often psychological – such as fatigue, irritability, or anxiety – and are easily underestimated. Hot flushes, poor sleep, vaginal dryness, and memory issues are common – and all of them can affect self-confidence and quality of life.

On top of these symptoms, many women struggle with the emotional meaning of getting older. After age 40, each of us carries a full emotional “story.” If you've worked through past difficulties and learned how to care for your mental health, this transition can feel easier. Some women even feel relieved not to worry about pregnancy anymore and embrace this new stage with curiosity and freedom. With grown-up children, there’s finally time to focus on yourself again - on joy, rest, and personal dreams.

But if old wounds or emotional pain have been buried for years, this phase of life may bring those feelings back to the surface. With more time to reflect, memories may come flooding in. Unresolved pain can feel louder and more disruptive than ever - especially when combined with the physical symptoms of menopause.

That’s where therapy can help. We clinical psychologists are trained to gently guide you through these feelings - to help you name, understand, and manage the thoughts and emotions that may be overwhelming you. In partnership with your gynaecologist, we work to support your overall balance - mind and body.

If any part of this article feels familiar, or if you’re currently navigating this phase of life, you don’t have to do it alone. At Clínica Medin in Lagoa, we’re here to support you - with kindness, expertise, and respect.

Take care of yourself. You deserve it. And if you're ready to feel better, we’re ready to help.
