The cosmic particle detector ANITA has just registered an unusual burst of radio signals from the ice of Antarctica, which scientists suggest could be a hint at the existence of new particles, or interactions between particles currently unknown to physics.

These radio waves were detected by the device at steep angles of 30 degrees below the surface of the ice.
This means that the signal had to pass through thousands of miles of rock before reaching ANITA, and the interactions that left the radio pulses should have been undetectable.
