In a statement, ASAE explained that these seizures resulted from an inspection operation, through the Specialized Brigade for Wines and Wine Products of the Central Regional Unit, aimed at the production and marketing of wine products in the municipalities of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (Guarda district) and Anadia (Aveiro district).

According to the same source, a total of 3,503 litres of wine products (1,107 litres of white wine, 1,339 litres of red wine and 1,057 litres of rosé wine) were seized from an economic operator. The labels omitted mandatory information, including unauthorised mentions, and were bottled and labelled to be introduced into the market.

A total of 81,000 labels were also seized for use, and the corresponding administrative offence proceedings were instituted.

ASAE instituted criminal proceedings against another operator for adding citric acid to gin, with 1,330 litres being seized. The product label also included a reference to citric acid, which is not permitted by law and was confirmed in a laboratory analysis carried out at the Food Safety Laboratory.
