This is one of the conclusions drawn from a study carried out by Consumer Choice, and reported by idealista, in which 204 Portuguese people aged 18 and over were interviewed.

“The majority of those interviewed value the stability of home ownership, although they face significant challenges such as high prices, difficulty in obtaining credit and economic uncertainty”, says Consumer Choice in a statement.

Cohabitation with parents or other family members is reported by 17%, and 13% live with children. Less common situations include living with friends or colleagues (2%) or sharing a house with strangers (1%).

The data also show, for example, that of the 31% of participants who do not own their own home, only 9% plan to buy a property in the next 12 months, while 18% estimate they will do so within one to three years. What's more, around a third of respondents (33%) want to buy a house but have not yet set a specific deadline for doing so, and 40% do not currently intend to acquire any type of housing.

Regarding the type of property preferred by consumers, the majority (67%) opt for houses, with only 25% of people preferring apartments.

Among consumers who own their own home, 31% say it took them more than three years to save up the amount needed for a down payment on the property, 18% say it took them between one and three years and 9% less than a year (9%).
