In Salir do Porto, there are the biggest Portuguese dunes and one of the biggest in Europe. It is 50 metres height and is located on a river beach in the same town.
Salir do Porto is a small town, located in Caldas da Rainha municipality, and Leiria district, nestled close to the São Martinho do Porto Bay.
The dune is located at Salir do Porto River Beach, by the Tornada River. Really close to the São Martinho do Porto, the access is easy; however, it is prohibited to drive a car on the dune.
Arriving there
To arrive in Salir do Porto, a drive may be required, but it is possible to arrive in the town by train. The beach is also close to the train station and easy to find. The beach's popularity makes it easy to find, with path indications along the town.
Right at the entrance of the village, there are indications of the path, and also the indication that it is forbidden to drive around the dunes. Not being able to drive there allows visitors to walk on the sand and feel the magnificence of the beach from the very beginning.
Special sand
The dune is approximately 100 thousand years old, and it is composed of red sandstone, a trace from an older dune. It also has granite in its composition, being almost like a unique natural piece in the country.
The beach
With crystal clear river waters, the beach is very appealing and calls for a bathe, nevertheless, it is required to be careful, since there are no lifeguards at the beach. There is a parking lot available, as well as a restaurant.
The surrounding area of Salir dune is well preserved, and there is a viewpoint really close to the beach, with views of São Martinho do Porto. In the same area, there are caves and dinosaur footprints.
Going up
Climbing up 50 metres can be a great challenge. Due to the inclination, it is almost impossible to go up the dune without having to stop for once and catch a breath.
Being made out of sand only, the challenge gets even harder, as it is required to make an extra effort to step on the dry sand. Those out of shape may have to do more stops, which are also recommended, because going down the dune may also require some care.
Going down
Despite looking easy, going down the dune can be a bit tricky. Although the temptation of running down the dune, it is important to make sure everything is done safely.
Nevertheless, going down the dune may be the funniest part, especially when surrounded by good friends, or even the funniest family member, who is always up for some fun moments.
