The red warning, the highest on a scale of three, is due, according to the IPMA, to the persistence of extremely high maximum temperatures, except along the coast.
The red warnings for the northern districts have been in effect since noon on Monday and will continue until 6 pm. today.
From that time, Braga, Porto, and Viana do Castelo will be under a yellow warning, due to "persistent high maximum temperatures in the interior of the district," but Bragança and Vila Real will be under an orange warning, the second most severe, due to very high maximum temperatures.
The IPMA has issued an orange warning for five more districts in the north of the country for today, with Aveiro and Coimbra becoming yellow starting this afternoon, but Guarda and Viseu remaining at orange.
The remaining districts on the mainland, with the exception of Faro, which has no warnings, are under a yellow warning due to persistently high maximum temperatures. The warning will last throughout the day except for the districts of Leiria, Lisbon, and Setúbal, which will have no warnings starting at 6 pm. today.
According to the IPMA, Braga and Évora are expected to reach 41°C (104°F) today. A slight drop in temperatures is forecast across the mainland on Wednesday.
The archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores are not under warnings today.
