"In 2024, it is estimated that 842.9 million vkm will have been travelled on Portuguese motorways, of which 92.0% will have been made by light vehicles", the report reads.
The INE notes that a "growth in the number of vkm was observed since the beginning of the year until the month of August, the month with the highest circulation on highways: 87.6 million vkm".
Truck movement was "consistent throughout the year and remained between 5 and 6 million vkm, with the exception of the months of July and October, where it exceeded this range, reaching 6.2 and 6.0 million vkm, respectively".
INE data also reveals that "the A1 motorway recorded the highest volume of light vehicle traffic with 140.3 million vkm (18.1% of the total)".
"The A2 followed with 71.0 million (9.1%) and the A4 with 46.2 million (6.0%). As with the national total, these roads recorded increasing traffic during the year, with a peak in August", it can be read.
Heavy vehicle-km per motorway was mainly recorded on the A1 (15.4 million; 23.0%). The second motorway with the highest volume of heavy vehicle traffic was the A25 (Vilar Formoso) with 6.2 million vkm (9.2%), followed by the A4 (Quintanilha) with 4.6 million (6.8%).
